A Meditation by Toryo Ito

In 2016, our founder, Vicky Tsai, met Toryo Ito, a zen monk at the Ryosokuin Temple in Kyoto. They found many similarities between his meditation philosophy and her vision for Tatcha, namely the mind-body connection and a holistic approach to well-being. He works with Tatcha to marry timeless Japanese wisdom with emerging scientific research to create sensorial rituals that engage the senses and uplift the spirit.

What are the benefits of meditation?

Meditation offers a place for the heart to rest, away from the noise of everyday life. It allows you to release the version of yourself that’s trapped in your own thoughts, and instead, return to a broader, richer, and more open version of who you are.

Your personal approach to meditation is rooted in the 5 senses - how do you recommend activating awareness of each of your senses?

It depends on where you are. Orders processed here will take 5-7 business days to arrive. Overseas deliveries can take anywhere from 7-16 days. Delivery details will be provided in your confirmation email.

Our philosophy is marrying modern science with traditional Japanese wisdom - what place does a traditional practice like meditation have in our modern world?

The essence of traditional wisdom and techniques remains unchanged. But thanks to advances in science and technology, things that were once considered “invisible” or “unmeasurable” can now be interpreted in ways that resonate with the modern mind. Practices like meditation, once limited to a select few, are becoming more accessible and effective. What was once seen purely as a path to spiritual enlightenment is now being freed by science and integrated more easily into daily life. What once seemed to require a long journey can now be embraced in shorter, more accessible ways.

How can one incorporate mindfulness and meditation into their day-to-day lives?

Even in daily life, moments like sitting quietly or following a personal routine can become opportunities. By becoming more aware of your senses and focusing on the present, repetitive tasks can naturally turn into moments of meditation or mindfulness.
