Stressed Mind, Stressed Skin

When the mind is under pressure, the skin responds—and vice versa. It’s a belief Japan has held for centuries, called hinou-dokon, or “skin and mind, same root.” NeuroSkin Science validates this exchange, and the Tatcha Institute was founded in Tokyo in 2010 to study it.

In April 2026, we conducted a survey of 1,000 women between the ages of 18–55 to see how stress impacts their lifestyle—and their skin. Here are the results.

Stress Is a Constant in Modern Life

91% of women feel stressed in their daily life—especially by finances, family, and work or school.

Stress Shows up on Our Skin

90% of women understand stress impacts their skin, showing up as breakouts, puffiness, and dryness.

Self-Care Quiets Stress

Only 18% of women use skincare to alleviate stress. Instead, they turn to other activities that might actually raise cortisol levels.
