Our Approach to Ritual
Ritual is the moment your day pauses, and you come back to yourself.
A quiet ceremony of cleansing, touch, and breath. Not a checklist. A return. To the body. To the present. To the version of yourself that was here before the noise arrived. In Japan, this is bidou: the way of beauty, cultivated through intention, ritual and care. It’s how Tatcha transforms skincare into mindful moments that restore balance and calm.
The Original Tatcha Ritual
These four steps are the original ritual Vicky brought back from Japan. Not a regimen — a practice. Four steps, each carrying an intention. The foundation everything else is built on.
Step 0Exhale
Before anything touches your skin, you breathe. You exhale. Step Zero costs nothing and takes no time. It is simply the decision to be present for what follows.
Step 1Release
In Japan, cleansing carries the spirit of purification — a mental unburdening as much as a physical one. Let go of what the day left behind. That is the difference between washing your face and cleansing your skin.
Step 2Renew
Exfoliation offers a moment of renewal—clearing what no longer serves and preparing the skin to begin again. Not stripping, but refining. Creating space to receive.
Step 3Restore
We pour ourselves outward all day. The essence is the moment of return — drawing in, restoring what was given away. It is also a delivery mechanism, opening the moisture channels so that skin can absorb active ingredients more fully.
Step 4Nourish
The simplest and most tender step—a moment of nourishment. Closing the ritual by cocooning the skin in care and returning to yourself.

“Ritual is not a complicated ask. It is a radical one. In a world that rarely pauses, the decision to tend to yourself — not to fix or optimize, but simply to care for yourself— is an act of quiet defiance.”

The Science of Transformation
Skin has life. Skin has emotions. What happens on the surface sends signals to the mind. Tatcha is built on the belief that skin and mind are one. Modern NeuroSkin Science proves it.
