The Cherry Blossom’s Lesson

Admire the Beauty in Every Moment

Now is the time for Hanami, the tradition of viewing cherry blossoms in Japan. Living on the branch for only 2 weeks at most, this bloom’s brief appearance reminds us to appreciate the unrepeatable nature, and beauty, of each passing moment.

The Significance of Cherry Blossoms, Japan’s National Flower

A Sign of Spring’s Arrival

A Symbol of New Beginnings

A Representation of Life’s Fleeting Beauty

ichi-go ichi-e “one time, one meeting”

This Japanese saying recognizes that every moment is “once in a lifetime,” no matter how small. It reminds us to cherish the present while we’re in it.

The Evolution of Hanami

LONG AGO,

It was thought that cherry trees held the spirit of gods, and their blooms signaled a fruitful harvest to come. Farmers picnicked under the trees celebrating their future prosperity, a practice called yoshuku, meaning pre-celebration of dreams before they happen.

OVER TIME,

Gathering under these elusive blooms shifted from manifestation to hanami, generally referred to as cherry blossom viewing, a seasonal celebration where family and friends come together to enjoy food, deepen connection, and share in the appreciation of nature’s beauty.

There’s a saying in Japan that if you catch a falling cherry blossom petal before it touches the ground, your wish will come true.
